How do you make a difference in a country half way around the world?  Well, for our youth group at First Presbyterian Church in Ballinger , it all started when we learned about the desperate situation of the refugees in Kenya .

While away at college one of our youth befriended two people from Kenya whose families were deeply affected by the tragedy taking place in the country.  This personal connection sparked concern in the members of our youth group.  Trouble in Kenya began when there seemed to be some sort of corruption within the presidential elections in December of 2007.  Violence erupted; ultimately causing close to 250,000 Kenyans to flee from their homes for safety.

Immediately after being informed of the dire needs of those people, youth leader Terry Austin was struck with an idea to raise money and awareness.  During passing of the peace, Terry presented his thought of holding a breakfast the following Sunday for our congregation.  The next Sunday dawned with our youth group preparing breakfast for a large crowd of over 50 members out of 114; a great turnout for such a small church.  Amazingly we were able to raise $560 through the gracious donations of our church.  With a little hard work and the support of our congregation we were able to make a difference half way around the world.

*Note to small congregations who decide to cook a meal for their church:
-50 people= 60 eggs, 6 packages of bacon, 6 dozen muffins and 4 cartons of orange juice
*not a bite left so add more if you have teenage boys!
