Training and Nurture Committee - Minutes - May 13, 2008  

The meeting was opened with prayer and devotion by Liz Somers at 12:45 p.m.

The minutes of the January 8, 2008 meeting were approved as printed.

Members present were:  Peggy Tharp, Gary Holloman, Horrace Griffin, Terah Hatter, Katherine Norvell, Liz Somers, and via conference phone Lynette Meyers and Linda Paquain

Also present were:  Jose Luis Casal (General Missioner) and Theresa Wright (Recording Clerk)

Absent were:  Janet Payne, Mary Margaret Davis, Ann Tilley

The minutes of the January 8, 2008 meeting were approved as corrected.

Communications

-         Presbyterian Children’s Home

-         APCE Annual Event

Both were received as information

Old Business:

-         Youth Task Force
Retreat held February 1-3, 2008 at Prude Ranch was largest event held in history.  Wonderful workshop leader.
Applications for the 2008-2009 task force are currently being accepted.
Retreat will be held February 6-9, 2009

-         Synod Youth Workshop Bus
Currently have 43 spaces reserved.  Reservations have been made for Sunday night at FPC, Sapulpa .  Need adult leader for trip.  Possible Kelly Ham.

          -        Youth Mission Trip
                   Currently have 45 signed up to go representing 5 churches.

-         Tres Rios Officer Training  
Mixed responses for offering training.

 By consensus the committee decided that no organized training will be done for 2008-20009.  Individual clusters and/or individual churches will be given the materials to provide their own training. 

 Possibility of creating new officer training on Form of Government.  Possibility of asking General Assembly commissioners (Kay Long and Jim Miles) to create leaders guide for training.  Will work on new officer training to be offered in 2010.  Jose Luis Casal will contact them regarding this.

 -         Educational Event in San Angelo – October 17-18, 2008
New Wind – New Fire:  Preparing the church to bring God’s word to the whole community.

Keynote speakers will be Eric Hoey (Congregational Transformation), Jill Hudson ( New Ways to Do Presbytery Business), Marissa Galvan-Valle (Christian Education)

Session 1 (Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.)
Plenary session with all 3 keynoters about 30 minutes each with brief break

          Session 2 will be repeats of all 3 keynoters
          Additional workshops for session 2 and 3 are:
  
Worship Styles; Stewardship; Related Bible Study; Small Churches; Into the community; New styles of music

 Tim Davenport-Herbst will be asked to prepare a flyer for the next presbytery meeting.

 Task force will meet again on July 30, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.   Terah Hatter will serve on the task force.   

-         Request tabled from last meeting:  Gary Holloman and Wade Hatter are currently working on a youth ministry certification program at Colombia Seminary.  Requesting scholarship money to help them complete this program. 
Money will be given from the Leadership Training line item (after expenses for training event are paid) and also some funds from the GM Discretionary Fund.  Request will be considered again at the next committee meeting.

 -         Presbytery Newsletter – suggestion from the Triennial Visit team of Committee on Ministry to add a “to give away and wanted” section to the newsletter for churches.  Also suggested looking into a co-opt order program for the presbytery.  (Suggestion from Jim Longstreet, COM member).  Also add space for each committee to report on what they are working on.

    It was MOVED, SECONDED AND CARRIED to accept the resignation of Sharon Manning (committee member and newsletter editor) with regrets.

New Business:

-         Pastors & Spouses Retreat 2008
Retreat will be held on November 20-22, 2008 at Indian Lodge

Suggest that a task force be appointed to prepare retreat.  Suggestions of Bob Reno, Cheryl Homsher, Joe McGee, JoBeth McLeod.  Cheryl Homsher will be asked to convene.  Katherine Norvell will contact them.

Next Meeting – September 9 at 12:30 p.m.

Next Devotional will be lead by Horrace Griffin
